Why Top Grass?

At Top Grass Cattle Co., our focus is on providing a great eating experience of Grass Fed Beef that is healthy and safe. Although simple said, there are many things to consider when raising top quality grass fed beef. Below are a few of the things that go into making Top Grass Beef the tasty, quality beef our customers have come to trust.

Nutrition

Cattle are selective grazers and choose those grasses/forages that are highest in nutritional value. By allowing them to choose the Top 40% of the grasses in each pasture and then rotating them to fresh new pastures, they are eating food that is at optimum nutritional levels high in simple sugars that ultimately convert into naturally marbled beef.

We harvest these same Top quality grasses/forages in the summer and store for our animals in the winter providing top quality feed all year round. This is vital to the health of the animal and ultimately the taste and quality of the meat.

No Grain

Eating grass/forages keeps our cattle’s digestive tract healthy. There have been several studies indicating that once grain is introduced into their system, it changes the health of their digestive track and ultimately changes the composition of the meat. Naturally Raised

Top Grass Cattle are raised without added hormones and antibiotics on pastures that are free of herbicides and pesticides. Not only do we believe this provides a better quality and tasting beef, we believe it is a healthier alternative to commodity beef.

Slowly Crafted

Because our cattle are not fed grain to fatten them up fast, they live to be almost 30-100 % longer than conventional grain fed animals. Our animals are processed at between 20 – 30 months of age as compared to 13- to 20 months for most other beef. This also allows that animal to mature and produce naturally marbled robust flavored beef.

Genetics

Not all animals are the same and not all animals within a breed are the same. We do however focus on those breeds that have a higher probability of producing a high quality beef raised in a grass fed program. We find British Breeds such as Black Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, Speckle Park, Galloway etc.to work best. We use ultra sound and gene mapping to help us select the genetics that will give us the best quality meat possible.

Ultrasound Technology

Although we are moving back to simple times of providing our animals with the basics, technology is our friend in helping us select those animals that will ultimately provide the best eating experience possible. Ultra sounding is a painless tool that gives us a snapshot of marbling, stress levels, fat levels and other indicators to good meat quality and help us with genetic selection of future animals.

Handled with Care

Thanks to people like Temple Grandin and others that have focused their efforts on understanding how cattle work, we have tools and education to help provide the best handling techniques and equipment to reduce the stress in our animals from birth to finish. There is a huge correlation between those animals that are calmly handled and tenderness.

Safety

Our processing and distribution partners are all government inspected and CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) approved.

We are certified and audited annually to ensure that our beef is free of added hormones, free of antibiotics, are raised in a free range environment and are Grass Fed.
